Family counselling

Families change and grow, and sometimes those changes bring tension, misunderstanding, or distance that's hard to work through on your own. Family counselling offers a space where everyone can be heard, patterns can be understood, and new ways of relating can be built together.

Common reasons families reach out

  • Ongoing conflict between family members

  • Communication breakdowns across generations

  • A child or teen struggling with mental health, behaviour, or school

  • Divorce, separation, or blended family adjustment

  • A family member coming out or navigating identity

  • Grief, illness, or major life transitions affecting the whole family

  • Estrangement or rebuilding a strained relationship

  • Parenting differences or disagreements about boundaries

What to expect

Your therapist will usually begin with an initial session involving the whole family, or the relevant members, to understand the family's history, current concerns, and what everyone hopes to get out of the process. This is also a chance to get a feel for how your therapist works and ask any questions. At times, your therapist may suggest meeting with individual family members separately as part of the process. This can help surface things that are harder to voice in a group setting and often supports the work of the family as a whole. If this is recommended, your therapist will be clear about the reasoning and how it fits into the overall plan.

Family counselling works best when everyone is willing to look at their own part in the family's patterns. Your therapist will gently challenge family members at times. You can expect a space that feels safe, structured, and fair to everyone involved.
